I’m surprised to see Jake Allen on the HNIC panel for the Leafs-Panthers series. He looks like a total natural. Great looking guy too! Another Hank Lunqvist!

And what he should be commentating about is how the Maple Leafs are using Anthony Stolarz, the ex Panther, as their main man goalie. He has started all 7 playoff games and Joseph Woll has started none. Based on the regular season stats of these goalies, this is exactly how it should be. On another note, Stolarz should be played like a main man goalie because his stats say he is a main man goalie.

Undoubtedly Joseph Woll isn't happy about this situation, and he will eventually become disgruntled and ask for a trade. Especially because he sees how much money Jeremy Swayman is making with Boston while realizing that's the same Jeremy Swayman who was behind him on the Team USA depth chart at the World Juniors.

Well Joseph Woll will get his chance to prove he’s better than Stolarz. The Leafs goalie was taken to the hospital on a stretcher during the third period. He left the game in the middle of the second period due to concussion symptoms. He was seem puking at the bench during a timeout before Woll went in.

This is not what you want if you are a Leafs fan. The Leafs were looking locked and loaded with Stolarz in goal and looking like a guy they could possibly ride to their first Stanley Cup since 1967, when Toronto finished in 3rd place in what was then a 6 team NHL. Now, Stolarz could be out for the playoffs. Woll is a good goalie, but the Leafs still do not know what they have in him, otherwise he would have been getting some starts. He has not started a single playoff game, because he was not trusted to do so.

Oilers: NHL Playoff Record 5th Consecutive Comeback Win
However, Edomonton's goaltending remains weak. Pickard was .888 last night and is at .891 for the playoffs, while Skinner, in his 2 games before being benched, was a moose ball sucking .810:

I have a feeling that Stolarz may get the start tonight. I could be wrong but if not tonight then for sure game three if the Leafs lose tonight with Woll.

Pickard is now 5-0 in these playoffs. With superhuman hockey players like Mcdavid & Draisaitl who seem like they can score at will I’m starting to think that for the second year in a row they could represent the West in the Stanley Cup finals against either Florida or Toronto.

The Leafs absolutely should be giving Stolarz more time with a concussed head and not be rushing him back. Playing him tonight would be a panicked move showing the world, and most importantly Joseph Woll, that Woll cannot be trusted. Woll is too good of a goalie to be sending these kinds of messages to, and it will backfire badly if the Leafs do it.

More importantly, even if Stolarz says he is feeling good, when he gets on the ice and he sees pucks and players flying around (motion can trigger concussion symptoms) he might suddenly feel different and the Leafs don't want to find out when they are down 5-0 that he doesn't feel right. Let him rest and do all necessary motion and sensory testing before you clear him.

It also reminds me that around 7-8 years ago the Yankees had a promising young outfielder named Clint Frazier whose career was ruined by post-concussion syndrome. They put Clint in the outfield too soon after the injury. He was visibly having trouble tracking fly balls, they were all adventures. Finally he told the Yankees coaching staff he was dizzy on his feet and they removed him from the game. Same thing could happen with Stolarz.

It also reminds me of a friend of mine who had a post concussive disorder literally collapsed in my arms due to motion sickness. Seeing moving cars was the trigger. I saw that his legs were jelly and he started leaning against me. The legs went and I needed to support his full body weight to prevent him from collapsing to the pavement in a heap. I gradually walked him over to a bench wnd sat him down while he recovered. He told me his head was spinning.

Don't fuck around with these symptoms!

Berube just said that Stolarz is doing fine & it’s a day-to-day thing. He isnt practicing this morning. Woll gets the start tonight with Matt Murray as back up. Yikes!

Based on what I am reading here I doubt we will see Stolarz again this series:
Toronto just has to ride with Woll, and hope it's a smooth ride. The good news is that unlike Pickard over at Edmonton, Woll has a very good track record and gives you every reason to think it will be a smooth ride. He has been anxious to prove he is just as good as, if not better than Stolarz, and can be trusted with playoff goaltending duties. Now he has the chance to do so.
