Where did you read that? Thats not what I wrote at all!
OK, so you are pumping the brakes now and keeping your enthusiasm in check. It is probably more likely that Picard has a couple of bad games and is benched in favor of Skinner than it is that he plays lights out and leads Edmonton to the Stanley Cup. But it is also possible that Edmonton can win with Picard simply being average, like in the .900-.905 range. If Picard and the Oilers pull that off, my sense is that Picard will never pay for another meal in Edmonton for the rest of his life. He would acquire cult hero status, and be remembered forever.
However, he cannot be less than average. While last night had some high points, the stats do not lie and his play has been below average. Skinner's play has been awful. This isn't a team like Toronto where you look at their top 2 goalies and you think they have a pretty good shot that either of them will be at least average and get the job done. Edmonton fans have been continually confounded by their goalies since the days of Fuhr and Moog. They thought they had it all figured out a couple of years ago when they gave Jack "Soup" Campbell $25 million. They figured they finally had it solved, until the signing turned into one of the worst goalie free agent signings in NHL history. Campbell is now out of thew NHL, and some in Edmonton think that the nets in Edmonton are haunted, or else cursed with a witch's hex. Whether Picard can overcome this wearing garlic cloves around his neck remains to be seen, but if he does, he will be the first Edmonton goalie in a long time to make a difference for them in the playoffs.
