Meanwhile, another Boeing plane crashes, in Tehran of all places. Not the kind of news the company needs right now.

I never took a plane and im not sure i want to take one personally.

I know statiscally i have more chance to die in a car crash, but there is just something about being in a car and having a chance to come out alive versus a plane where you're pretty much done if it crash.

Maybe one day ill have to take one if i want to go to L.A or such (its a bit far to go by earth lol) but honestly im not looking forward to it, i feel like im gonna be shitting my pants scared all trip long...

Russian sites say they are mostly college students (of Iranian descent) returning home to Canada (different cities) who were attracted by the cheap airfares and convenient connections in Kiev.

https://www.bbc.com/russian/features-51033731 (scroll down)

It seems it was not really to get a cheap flight but to get out asap as many flight in/out of Iran were getting canceled because of the tension.

Canadian university have many many Iranians students. Many stay here after their study. They are mostly computer scientist or engineer. I have known many over the years. All great human being.

With cheap airfare unfortunately you often get what you pay for. The NY Times article posted earlier had been criticized heavily as Boeing trying to sell its safety record rather than cut air fares to restore public confidence. It seems like they may have been under pressure from airlines to suppress the former and do more of the latter. Public confidence has not been restored.

I think for now its all speculations without any solid basis as to what happened.

The plane was fairly new, manufactured / delivered in 2016 and experienced a major in flight catastrophic "Failure" which at the moment
we don't know what type of failure. Explosion in mid air, missile shut down etc etc are mentioned. It does not look like a single part, system
malfunction, failure. No Mayday or any distress call as we know off. (We can rule out MCAS in this case).

The answer could be in the black boxes but for the moment they won't be handed over to Boeing or to any American / Western agencies
who can read them and find the answers, so politics, tensions between Iran and the US will dictate the outcome of this investigation for now.

Cruiser777 please keep us updated, as this is your specialty.
It's always sad when so many young people die unnecessarily
I flew in Ukraine about 12 years ago, and it didn't inspire confidence in the passengers, but that was a long time ago.
I hope for the US economy and Boeing employees that it's not another airplane design flaw.

So Newsweek just published a missile shut down the plane. Most probably by error. Iran would have never shut down a plane knowing 63 Iranian/Canadians was on it and 75 other Iranians on their way to Canada also. They blew up big time killing their own siblings.

Confirmed? shot down by Iran?, “by mistake”?

Nothing has been confirmed, nor ruled out. It's all just guessing right now, until they finish evaluating the evidence and black box. But an Iranian missile amidst the fog of war is a definite possibility

Yep, the Iranians shot it down. Trigger happy knuckleheads
US increasingly believes Iran shot down Ukrainian airliner by accident

Nothing is off the table at the moment, if a US navy ship , very sophisticated one at that (Cruiser / USS Vincennes (CG-49)) can down a
passenger plane, anything is possible during high tensions in a war footing.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/hist...nvokes-tragedy-many-americans-have-forgotten/

But the comments from the Iranian government just few minutes after the crash blaming on "Engine explosion", "Turning to the airport" etc etc
while there was a sudden termination of radar data transmission, that raises some suspicion (That indeed it could have a a missile shoot down).

I think exactly where things stand at the moment.

No.... it’s confirmed.

Exactly Trudeau just said so in a press conference. And Trudeau is no Trumpet he would not have said anything against his government adviser.

It's a delicate situation as very obviously this was by mistake. Iraniens would not have killed their own on purpose. A few more head will be cut behind close door to those responsible for that mistake.

One of the worst aspects of war is so called collateral damage. When it's a bunch of peasants in a faraway land, we tend not to give it much thought. But when it's our own citizens, and middle class students, we feel what others feel.
