Altidore Ruled Out of US-Portugal Match

I have read mixed things about whether US is better off with Johansson in the lineup on the soccer message boards:

http://www.espnfc.com/fifa-world-cu...ltidore-out-vs-portugal-with-ailing-hamstring

Some are saying Altidore is overrated and his actual goal scoring against better competition is not that great. Others say he draws defenders and opens up opportunities for others. Others say Johansson is potentially better and his passing skills are better. What do you guys think?

I also read that Ronaldo is far less than 100% for Portugal, so this may actually be a fair fight.

DAMN!

The U.S. was not supposed to be able to beat Portugal, yet the team fought very hard to overcome a deficit to take the lead. The tying goal by Portugal was as heart-breaking as it was beautiful. A flying arcing pass by Renaldo sharply redirected off the head of his teammate far to fast for the U.S. goalie to react. U.S. fans would have been ecstatic before the game to have gained a tie, but after fighting so hard to come back to lead and then seeing a miraculous shot cheat them of a win with only 30 seconds left it now feels like a loss. Still, we're doing extremely well and the odds are we'll get to the second round.

It was heartbreaking. It was stunning. It was the reason they call Group G the "Group of Death."

With 30 seconds left and despite astronomical odds, the United States men's national soccer team was about to qualify for the second round of the World Cup.

But just like that, Portugal's superstar Cristiano Ronaldo crossed to Silvestre Varela, who headed it into the net, tying it, 2-2, marking the final play of the game.

This means everyone in the group of death has a mathematical chance at advancing.

This means the U.S. and Germany are in good position to advance, because a tie gets them both into the round of 16.

Still, this was a brutal end for the U.S., which fought back after trailing early. Jermaine Jones scored the tying goal at the beginning of the second half, and with about 10 minutes to go, Clint Dempsey, who recovered from a broken nose during the U.S.-Ghana match, nailed a goal with about 10 minutes to go, putting the U.S. ahead 2-1.

Although Klinsmann owns some bakeries in Germany and has some other business interests there, he is married to an American former model from southern California and has lived in southern California near his wife's family for a long time. He wanted to coach the USA team for a long time before he was ever made team USA coach. Literally since he resigned as German coach in 2006 there was talk of him taking over the USA team, although it did not happen until 2011.

Sharkman,

Are you aware that a gentleman's agreement between the Germany and USA to draw Thursday's match will result in both team's advancing? Anything in the rules to prevent it from happening?

Yeah but I am sure Germany would be desperate to win since winning only one match in group stages doesn't exactly add confidence to the team ahead of the knockout stages. If they can't win against USA, what does it say about the upcoming matches they have against France in QF and probably Brazil in SF?

Chiellini Demands FIFA Bite Back At Suarez

http://www.espnfc.us/fifa-world-cup...-forward-luis-suarezs-bite-in-world-cup-clash

"It's a disgrace," the Juventus defender told Sky Sport Italia. "The referee decided this game. If either team should have gone through, then it was us.

"Giving a red card to Marchisio and no red to Suarez decided the game. There was a different treatment for both sides and that decided the game and decided who went through.

"When we had 11 men, they weren't a threat at all and we were in perfect control, but then in the end, [the red card] was decisive.

"But then Suarez gets away with whatever he wants because FIFA want the top players involved. He bit me, and the sign is there. Now [FIFA] have got to have the courage to take action."

Wow! what a spirited come back by Team USA against Belgium in the second-half of overtime....Team USA had Belgium on their knees but the comeback fell just short.....Team USA had several clear cut opportunities to tie the game...Belgium stopped playing with a 2-0 lead thinking Team USA was going to roll over and play dead...Belgium thought they can have their fries and beer before the end of OT....Surprise Surprise, Belgium almost ended up fried!!!....Unbelievable courage displayed by Team USA!

Just on guts alone, Team USA merits a trip to the White House to meet Obama!

And coach Jurgen Klinsmann singing the US National Anthem....Pricelesssssssssss!

I won't put down Belgium so quickly. They are a much better team than USA. Just look at the number of shots on goal 27 vs 9.
Let's not forget that USA got here because of Portugal's poor performance. They are not a real contender for the Round of 16, yet. May be in 8 years with the help of Klinsmann's German know-how.

hello all,

It was so close. The U.S. just missed a goal that would have given the team a fantastic win around the 90:00 mark when a shot attempt spun wide. When the Belgians finally scored it seemed to break the American team's spirit for a while, leading soon after to a second goal for Belgium. It was great to see the team gather itself to score and make the Belgians have to fight to survive. American fans can be very proud. Perhaps more athletes will choose Futbol more often because of this fine showing.

Cheers,

Well to be honnest, it could have been 4-1 Belgium in the regular time. No contest between the 2teams.

But US team has a great spirit, a great goalie and a great physical fitness that allow them to worry Belgium in the last 10mn of the OT.

With so many latinos and european leaving in USA I still not understand how such a big country can't be one of the major soccer nation.

One thing is sure, this young Belgium team will win a major competition in the next 8years...
