Ovechkin had 2 goals and 2 assists in the Caps win last night. He now has 8 goals and 5 assists in 8 games- 13 points and is on a pace for 130 points. He seems to have experienced a rejuvenation and resurgence since the playoffs last year.

Last nights game with the GEO shows that Talbot needs to be replaced and soon. In the second period no shots on net for about 8 min and the first one a goal then 3 shots later another goal.
Anyways, a good game to watch. It could be a good thing that the GEO have a brutal schedule at the start of the season, tough teams to play against.

Tonight was yet another head to head battle between Auston Matthews and Patrick Laine to determine and settle the debate over who is the best player in the 2016 draft, and both players were held pointless. I think both are trying so hard to prove that they are the better player that they get off their game and end up being held pointless. This game has become an albatross for the two players.

You obviously didn't watch the game. Most observers after the game pointed to Auston Matthews as being the top player on the ice other than Frederik Andersen. Several Leafs goals were set up by Matthews although he wasn't credited with any assists on them. There was also an end-to-end rush that he made. His strong defensive play also prevented some chances. Many of the hockey experts gave him an A+ for the game he played.
There was also a poll made yesterday where voters were chosen to pick either Matthews or Laine as their #1 should they hold the draft today. Over 90% of the voters chose Matthews.
The fact that they are still doing such polls illustrates the vigor and vitality of this debate. I think many of the experts are still undecided as to Matthews v. Laine. Some have argued Laine. Some have argued Matthews. There is no clear winner to this debate. Laine emerged last year as a premiere goal scorer in the same class as Ovechkin. I suspect the debate will rage on until one or the other emerges as the superior player over time. Laine might be on a faster track to his first Stanley Cup and this accomplishment, if achieved, will likely hurtle him ahead of Matthews in the debate, especially if he is a big factor in the playoffs. Playoff success will be important to resolving the debate.
Reminds me of the Mattingly vs. Boggs best hitter in the AL debate of the mid 1980s. Boggs made the HOF and Mattingly didn’t because Mattingly got hurt in 1987 and wasn’t the same thereafter. However before that Mattingly was the better hitter. Similarly we have to let the careers of Matthews and Laine play out and see what happens.

It was an online poll. Possibly in The Athletic.
I was reading that the Winnipeg Sun did a poll of the poll respondents and learned that 90% of the respondents to that poll identified themselves as fans of the Toronto Leafs, 70% said they had attended 2 or more Leafs hockey games in the last year and 45% admitted that they owned Auston Matthews jerseys. Only 3% of the poll respondents identified themselves as Winnipeg Jets fans.
