Exactly. Executions are more costly in the end. Maybe if we stopped arresting people for petty reasons we’d have plenty of space in prisons for murderers and rapists. To me, prison should be used as a last resort in cases of violent crimes. Anything else should be dealt with differently. There are too many people in prison who aren’t a threat to anyone and shouldn’t be taking space and ressources in prisons. Home confinement is a good alternative, for example. And there are many other possibilities.
I think that you're wrong.
Execution are very cheap to carry on.
What is costly is the appeal process that the guy might launch. The attorneys are making a lot of money. It doesn't cost much to the State because the judge and the legal system is paid for anyway. And the legal cost of the process is supported by the criminal.
To keep in jail a dangerous criminal cost at least 100,000$ a year (rapport annuel du vérificateur général du Canada, édition 2009). That is a lot of money and bear in mind that we do not spend as much on the elderly who worked and paid taxes all their life.
