This happens all the time.. a lot of guys just send us elaborate and sometimes disgusting fantasies and pretend they want to book but never do it, or they just send us a ton of messages and ask a ton of questions and ghost when it's time to book. I've even had guys from this forum do this. They promise to book and ask questions & never book, or they ask for services that aren't advertised and they are just trying to see if I'm willing to cross my own boundaries.
A lot of these men do it specifically with indy providers in my opinion..
I honestly understand why a large portion of indy providers ask for a deposit and I've been considering doing it myself.
On this specific part... I think personally its ok to ask a few questions even if you don't intend to book right now. Obviously don't promise you'll do it tough and keep short and simple. Especially on services, of course if its clearly said "restrictions : this and that" and they still ask i agree its pushing boundaries but if its not mentioned at all i think its fair game to ask no? Not all providers who allow cim or cof for instance will list it on their website. Asking then become the only way to know for sure.
Otherwise im with you on the rest, i know there is lots of time wasters unfortunately.
Oh I totally agree with you that it's ok to ask questions when services are not clear even if you're not sure you want to book!
I don't view that as "time waster" behavior. I'm more talking about clients who ask endless questions and have not read the ad or website, or are asking about services that are clearly not offered. Some clients ask for "custom made sessions" for a lower rate for instance... Some want to see if they can get you to offer something "just for them"

I myself was involved in negociating the sale of a golf course as a laŵyer. Potential buyer was presented as a rich man from the middle east. My client did preliminary due dilligence to qualify the buyer.He had a nice car and designer clothing.First info seemedncredible. Turned out, the potential buyer had not enough money and was just negociating for fun. He was doing the dealing himself and was not using a lawyer. This was fishy. It lasted weeks. We just wasted time until we uncovered his game and got confirmation that he did not have access to the cash to make the deal.
If I am contacted by a new, I always ask ŵhere they got my name and contact information. If it is random because of a website or likedin, it usually is a waste of time. If it is a business reference, I always call the contact to get inside info. Last test : I tell them upfront it is 530$ per hour to meet and usually files always cost more than 5000$. When I had my firm, I asked a deposit to cover 50% of the estimated fees and put it in my in trust account. No free meeting. If they accept without complaing, its a good start. Once we meet, if I can't help, I usuallly waive the fee and try to find a reference. I am honest. If the person is a nut job, I send them to see Raymond Chabot Grant Thornton.

I know Raymond Chabot Grant Thornton is a big firm Is there a particular reason to send them there? Is there a news story about them? Just curious. It would be cool if all time wasters for travailleurs de sex and lawyers were held accountable.
I'm speculating here, but with generational population growth, there's just more Millennials and Gen Z entering the client space, and probably doing it earlier as a side-effect of early internet-driven hypersexualization. For Boomers and Gen X, engaging SPs, was always pretty jaded. For a lot of these younger guys, texting and digital conversation is part of their arousal ritual. I would guess, that alone adds a ton of traffic. So perhaps, more eyes, more DMs, more bullshit.
Also wouldn't be surprised if a chunk of those DMs are from minors too. They're getting exposed way earlier, and obviously can't book even if they wanted to. Just more noise.
Legit curious question to the girls: (Apart from the usual requests) What does the breakdown look like for you? How often are guys trying to pick you up for free, or just trying to chat just for the conversation? What are weird messages you guys get that aren't job related.

I don't think it's related to generation personally.. a lot of good client I have are under 40.
I'd say most of my messages are serious, but it fluctuates. I got a lot of messages from guys who "just want to chat" when I joined this forum. I don't think everyone has negative intentions, but some of them seem to want to gossip or gain information from me in ways that are really not subtle.
People rarely waste my time and I never had a client who no called-no showed, so I don't know, if a provider thinks she has too many time wasters and it's become unbearable, maybe it's time to change something.
