Flames' Wideman suspended 20 games

NHL.com said:
NEW YORK -- Calgary Flames defenseman Dennis Wideman has been suspended for 20 games, without pay, for conduct violative of Rule 40 (Physical Abuse of Officials) during NHL Game No. 742 in Calgary on Wednesday, Jan. 27, the National Hockey League announced today.

The incident occurred at 11:19 of the second period.

Under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement and, based on his average annual salary, Wideman will forfeit $564,516.20. The money goes to the Players' Emergency Assistance Fund.

I wonder how his Concussion is doing.....what a JOKE!
20 Games is ~1/4 of a Season.

Could you give us an update s'il vous plait?

Man how things have changed in 2 short months lol...... karma karma karma, she is so sexy but such a bitch
Habs: 39 points, 1st in Atlantic Division, 1st in Eastern Conference, 1st in league. 88 goals for, 56 goals against, plus 32 - despite several key injuries, and despite NOT having "the world's best coach since May 20, 2015".

Leafs: 19 points (i.e.; less than HALF of the Montreal total!), LAST in Atlantic Division, LAST in Eastern Conference, 27th in league. 53 goals for, 66 goals against, MINUS 13 - even with NO key injuries, even with having "the world's best coach since May 20, 2015", and even with their FANTASTIC REBUILD in full swing.

I guess you're right that "life is great"...for EVERYONE except Leaf fans!!!!! (How can you tell if someone's a Leaf fan? Simple: he's the guy with the paper bag on his head, the "kick me" sign on his back, and the discarded Leaf sweater on the ice.)

:lol::lol::lol:

Condon: 8-2-3 record, 19 of a possible 26 points, .916 save percentage, 2.19 goals against average!

I've always believed that our good friend JC was always a closet habs fan. Since he's currently unavailable, let me take care of the update:

The habs are the worst team in the entire NHL (by far!!) since December 3rd. The second-worst?? None other than the Buffalo Sabres, who beat these same habs last night. The habs are a very bad team!! As of now, the current edition is the worst habs team of all time!! I kid you not!!

Just an hour or so ago, i read an interview of former habs great and GM Serge Savard where he stated that using the old Carey Price excuse is ridiculous, no matter how good the player is. No single player, no matter how good he is, should have such a negative impact on his team once he goes down to injury. The fact everyone stops scoring and keeps making boneheaded defensive plays is the main reason why the team sucks so much. Mike Condon isn't Carey Price, but he's played well in most games. He's kept his team in most games and were it not for a pure lack of execution, the habs would still be a playoffs team. But they suck!!!

One of my sources told me last night that he was told by a reliable source of his that Michel Therrien will be fired within a week from now. Who knows, it may happen tomorrow. Marc Bergevin will address the media and will admit that he erred in guaranteeing Therrien's job for the rest of the season barely two weeks ago. We'll see.

People seem to forget that hockey is a business. The only reason a billionaire buys a hockey team is to make money. And the best time for a team to make money is during the playoffs when the billionaire owner gets to keep most of the revenue made during the playoffs. Marc Bergevin has a mandate to make the playoffs. If he fails to make the playoffs, it means the Molson family and its shareholders will lose millions this season. The fans have already started to stay away from the Bell Centre and the scalpers (good for them!!!) are now struggling to get rid of tickets. This is a franchise in total dissaray right now and there is no end in sight to their current freefall.

It doesn't seem that a major trade will happen. Bergevin doesn't seem to have the ability to make a major trade. Most of his trades have been bargain-bin type of trades with 4th liners and minor league players. These are typical 'Marc Bergevin' trades. He's also been firm in his press briefings where he told the media he will not part with the younger talent other GMs are asking for.

I have a question for you:

Will Carey Price be back with the habs??? What if his knee never heals properly and he's forced to retire from hockey early?? Many players have had to retire prematurely over the years and the majority of them weren't even goalies. A goalie needs healthy knees. What if he comes back and gets hurt immediately?? And will he want to return when the team wants him to if he doesn't feel ready? Don't forget that he'll be an unrestricted free agent in just a couple of years and right now, things aren't looking very good for him to be able to snatch that big contract he was hoping to get. Teams will stay away from a goalie with bad knees, no matter how good he once was.

november

Carey Price will be back one day with the habs. They want him to heal 100 percent. Not the first player to have a knee injury and won't be the last. They will be sellers and should get some more young assets. They need a first line centre. Most of their forwards are playing out of position.

Maple Leafs' Babcock to coach 1,000th NHL game...

NHL.com said:
DEVILS (26-20-5) at MAPLE LEAFS (18-22-9)

TV: MSG+, SNO, NHL.TV

TORONTO - It will be milestone night when the Toronto Maple Leafs host the New Jersey Devils at Air Canada Centre on Thursday.

Not only will Maple Leafs coach Mike Babcock be coaching his 1,000th NHL game, Toronto captain Dion Phaneuf will play his 800th game, right wing Joffrey Lupul his 700th game and center Nazem Kadri his 300th game.

Babcock said when he broke into the NHL, he believed experience was overrated, but in time changed his mind.

"As you get on, you understand how important it is," Babcock said. "It helps you make better decisions. I have become a way better coach because I understand what athletes go through and the mental grind it can be."

Babcock joined the Maple Leafs last summer, when he signing an eight-year $50 million contract. He coached the Detroit Red Wings to the Stanley Cup in 2008 and Canada to Olympic gold medals in 2010 and 2014. He also coached Canada to gold medals at the 2004 World Championship and at the World junior Championship in 1997....

Flames' Wideman issues statement on suspension. Defenseman says he 'did not have any intent to hit the official'

NHL.com said:
Calgary Flames forward Dennis Wideman issued a statement Thursday apologizing for his incident with a linesman during a game Jan. 27 against the Nashville Predators.

The NHL suspended Wideman for 20 games Wednesday for conduct violative of Rule 40 (Physical Abuse of Officials).

"Firstly I want to apologize to [linesman] Donny Henderson," Wideman said. "I feel awful about what happened. Hopefully he's recovering and is going to be back on the ice soon. I feel really bad about the whole situation. The last seven days has been tough. Never in my career have I ever disrespected or done anything like this to an official. I think I've prided myself on having a great working relationship with the officials and I hope to continue that when I get out there.

"I'm really disappointed with the decision in the length of the suspension. I did not have any intent at any time to hit the official or hurt him or anything like that. I would never do something like that. I'm pretty disappointed with the decision."

The National Hockey League Players' Association said in a statement Wednesday that it planned to file an appeal of the suspension.

"We strongly disagree with the League's decision to suspend Dennis Wideman," the NHLPA said. "Dennis has played in 11 NHL seasons and almost 800 games without incident. The facts, including the medical evidence presented at the hearing, clearly demonstrate that Dennis had no intention to make contact with the linesman. An appeal has been filed on the player's behalf."

Flames president of hockey operations Brian Burke also issued a statement Wednesday after the suspension was announced:

"We were informed earlier today that our player, Dennis Wideman, was suspended for contact with an official in last Wednesday's game against Nashville. We disagree with the severity of today's suspension ruling and maintain that Dennis' collision with the linesman was unintentional and accidental. We agree that our officials' safety and well-being is of extreme importance in order to allow them to perform their duties. They perform an invaluable but underappreciated role in our game. We support sanctions against players who make deliberate contact with any official. However unintentional and accidental contact does occur at times in our game. We will have no further comment on the matter at this time."

Should have gotten the remaining Games of the Season....( as of Today, 33 Games left in Regular Season)...

A goalie only needs good lateral movement not skate the whole ice, so I think he could be back. As for how good he will be with or without surgery, will be seen. Price needs to sit out the rest of the season but decide on surgery once and for all, NOW. It will take that much longer to heal from surgery later if not done sooner.

I agree with the other points and even with the Serge Savard points (Even though I dislike him a lot!). The whole team stinks as a team especially the Dmen who make boneheaded plays constantly! Forwards are playing out of position, agreed! All part of the MT system! Get rid of the idiot! I would get rid of the whole coaching staff and hopefully bring in some successful thinkers to coach them. I recall listening to someone quoting the great Shutt once saying he used to practice shooting on net after each loss, 60 Pucks firing at the net one after another and repeating if he did not get 60 in the net under 60 seconds. I think the team needs minds like that to get them back on track cause their shots are piss poor and inaccurate, and they are out of focus.

CA OUT!!!

Hey ! nice to see you did not jump off the Champlain Bridge yet ghg.... What do you think of that team of yours lately?

What's to say? they're in a bad slump.

It could be a lot worse: like not winning a playoff series in almost 12 calendar years ... or only qualifying once during that period, (in a shortened season no less) and flaming out in a first round epic choke and fail ...

Haha.... the "Chokes" on them!

The GLORIOUS Edmonton Oilers have the chance to do a couple great things in Montreal tomorrow:

1. With a win, the young Oilers team can show scabs fans just how far away from winning a cup this current canadians team is, other than maybe a protective athletic cup

2. They can help to continue what one habbies fan considers, a "bad slump" (hahaha)

Sorry but losers of 21 out of 25 is a bad team, not a slump ;)
Bad slump???

Very soon, it'll be a worse catastrophe than the Titanic!!!!

p.s. Nice to see you come out of hiding, buddy!

Bad?? Bad?? How about AWFUL??? How about WORST TEAM IN HOCKEY???

You're right about the cup, though. The only one they'll come close to in the next 20 years or so will be an athletic cup. This is a team that is in terrible shape and rebuilding that team won't be easy and it'll take some time. They have too many bad contracts on this team and there is no guarantee that Carey Price will be as effective as he once was once he returns. There are also no guarantees he'll re-sign with the habs once he becomes UFA in a couple of years. It's not that hard to imagine him heading out west where he's from....or to Nashville and his love, country music.
