somebody? anybody? Why would anyone do this? What is the benefit? I must not be seeing something because to me it just looks pointless and utterly ridiculous.

Different *strokes* for different folks

pick your own wildest, weirdest kink and try explaining it to someone that doesn't get it.
my (admittedly limited) understanding is that it isn't a kink at all and is generally a non-sexual practice, so not sure your analogy fits, but again I admit to ignorance and am perfectly happy to be corrected by anyone more knowledgeable if that's the case.

If you're truly curious and not just trying to shit on them, you can listen to this podcast:

As someone who knew nothing about it and who knows nobody that's even a little bit into furry, it was interesting episode.

Thank you, good to know. Still don't understand it or why someone would feel like a furry

Don't know what on earth this is or even something like this exist.

Well it is not something harmful, humiliating and life threatening.

Sooo.... whatever floats your boat.

I can understand the enjoyment of anonymity from wearing a fursuit, even in non-sexual contexts. It may be preferable for people who are anxious about being in public.

I put it in the exact same category as people who buy expensive clothes and flashy material goods outside of their means. It's the creation of a persona (or fursona) to live a life that isn't like your normal one.

aren't there like conventions with this, or i'm mixing something up w/ this. i knew a girl once, a really fiesty capable chick... she had cut through a hotel convention of this on her way to something and it managed to really freak her out like in a serial killer/stalking kind of terror.

I think everyone is doing this, to a certain degree, with the way we project ourselves in different social situations (work, school, friends, etc), the way we talk, dress, act and the lies we tell each other. They just have tails and shit (and a funny name to call themselves).

Unrelated but we should have more niche named groups like this. Guys with beanies and plaid shirts - Hipsters. Guys who spend a shit ton on suits and watches etc - Corpies. Girls with snatched waists and BBLs - Bubblies.

Yes we all have some degree of social masking, whether personally or a work, but the question of degree matters. This doesn't equate to social masking IMHO, although certainly it's a means of expression, I guess. It's like I can tap you on the shoulder to get your attention (let's make obligatory small talk) or I can hit you on the shoulder with a baseball bat (furries). At some point (not sure where the line is exactly) you leave regular conventions behind and step outside of societal behavioural norms to a degree it can no longer be considered just social masking and becomes something else.

True, but wearing a fur suit every few months with a bunch of your friends is more dramatic than getting plastic surgery over the course of many years to look like a hyper-sexualized barbie? Or a guy who lives every free second he has in the gym to get a specific version of jacked? Or a guy who drops thousands on golf equipment and tee-times just so he can cosplay with his rich boss?

It's a gradient, sure, but it just looks weirder because they have big, fluffy outfits.

I'm not really sure if I can go along with that entirely. Is it really weird because of the outfits? I would actually argue that it's less weird because if the outfits. Let's remove the outfits from scene entirely, for examination purposes. Imagine the same people doing what they're doing and exhibiting the same behaviours without the costumes. That becomes even weirder and more disturbing to me than if they are emulating animals using costumes. My understanding is that they're are people who do it without costumes too. Not sure if they're still called furries ar that point. lol

It just doesn't bother me or make me look twice, that's all. I think it's a 100% less strange than literally half the stuff people post on here wanting a woman to do to them (and I don't bat an eyelash at those kinks either).

It makes them happy, it isn't bothering anyone, and it's interesting to think about. Wins all around.
