Well, that’s a first.

Disclaimer: not in MTL this was in NY just now.

I hadn’t seen her before and had a good time and as I was leaving she handed me a gift bag with a card and some snacks from Japan. Very cute.

Nice, but I wouldn’t want to break the « party »…
Can it be a recycled gift from a previous gent?…
Yes or something you are not particularly fond of.

But still nice to receive something.

Maybe I'm wrong for saying this but I don't think that would be a bad thing. If I got a box of top notch chocolate and gave it to my next client when it's still fresh, it's still a present and thoughtful :)

Sorry for party crashing again but the card writing at the bottom says Arigato/thank you. So only OP knows what has been written below :)

I assume it says: Thank you [his name]

So I think it is a real gift and not just a “I didn’t like it so let me try to give it to the first person I see” gift

This is thoughtful !! I've given gifts to some regulars before but never to a client I meet for the first time. My mouth is a gift in itself though. Lol
Dine-in only. No takeaway though :p

Well
Oh, thank you! It's like restaurants giving you hard candies with the bill, it looks cute but we rarely eat them.
It's part of Asian snack culture. But there in Japan, gifting is a cult itself. You have tons of box and wrapping for nothing really spectacular. It's just in Asian culture gifting and how the gift look is part of being polite or respectful of the person receiving it.
That's the kind of snacks I used to buy at airport before leaving Japan lol
Only few well known snacks will be bought at a specific location like the Tokyo banana although it is widely available at the airport too

I remember I had a client who lived in Singapore bring me a box of pineapple jam cookies. He said a lot of people didn't love them, but he wanted to show me something from where he lives. The packaging was really nice and I still use the box to store beads for my jewelry making. This is actually one of my favorite presents I received even if it doesn't seem like a big deal.

A
I gave a couple of gifts to some regular long time clients. It was personnalized gifts based on their interest. Example: I gave a horror movie 'doll' collector edition to a horror movie fanatic client :)
As long as it's not an Annabelle doll ...

Caroline of FKS. She was on her period when I saw her the first time. She left a huge blood stain on the couch at one of the lofts at Auberge du Vieux-Port. She also left another stain in one of the beds with a bed post in the second room when I attempted to tie her hands up.

So does these blood stains count as gift packages?
