Barack Obama now stands with Presidents Franklin Roosevelt and Lyndon Johnson for his historic achievement in bringing social justice to the US and bringing the US in line with the rest of the civilized world. In fact, what Obama achieved yesterday may rank higher than Roosevelt's Social Security Act and Johnson's Medicare Act. Both prior presidents passed their bills with considerable Republican opposition, but without the total obstructionism and campaign of fear and lies which Obama had to overcome.

Obama's place in history and his re-election are both now assured. Here are a couple of links:

The New York Times editorial celebrating this great accomplishment:
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/03/22/opinion/22mon5.html?hp

And article by former Bush speechwriter on the epic failure of the Republican party and the damage it will do to them down the road:
http://www.frumforum.com/waterloo

Note: While I'm not personally thrilled with the bill that was passed, it is at least a strong start.

"Re-election "assured". WRONG! Don't have time to explain right now. But watch how this thread develops. The war that goes on here will reflect the divisiveness this event will cause throughout the U.S.
Merlot, read the Frum article. It won't be long before the positives, the real results that people actually feel affecting their everyday lives, become apparent. The real reason Republicans opposed this bill is that they know, deep down, that passage would be a long-term huge electoral victory for the Democrats.

The losers here are insurance companies and Republicans. The winners are the people, Democrats and right-wing talk show hosts, who are not drowning in fodder for the crazies who listen to them.

Overlooked is Abraham Lincoln and the Emancipation Proclamation.

Obama's legislation effectively opens the door, freeing Americans from the slavery of poor health and the resulting costs.

Belated well done.

No ones even read the entire bill including those bone heads on capital hill. With the Cornhusker Kick-back and the Louisiana Purchase etc. How is it that Union members can side step the Cadillac medical care plan tax just because they voted for this guy? And all the other bribes? And no tort reform? I will ask again where will the Canadian Politicians go when they need open heart surgery? Now all we need is Cap and Tax and we will be sucking hind tit forever.

Obama had better make citizens of all those illegal aliens quick before the November elections.

Note* I agree that something needed to be done. I just hope we can make it work somehow. I just don't see it happening.

Actually, many people have read the bill, most notably the CBO, who project considerable savings to the taxpayers down the line.

With the Cornhusker Kick-back and the Louisiana Purchase etc.
Actually, the reconciliation bill gets rid of the Cornhusker kickback. Don't know why the left the Lousiana money in it, except that it probably helps those that Bush abandoned after Katrina.

Eastender, while the Emancipation Proclamation was clearly one of the great moments in American history, it was a Presidential order. I'm specifically referring here to legislative achievements, which it was not. While the Republican opposition to the Social Security and Medicare acts was fierce, it paled in comparison to the total obstructionism by the current Republicans.

The real loss that the Republicans suffered here was that, in their total opposition to the bill and their unwillingness to work with the Democratic majority on a compromise bill, they were unable to get anything that they might have wanted in this bill. Obama clearly showed a willingness to work with them, for example, on tort reform, but, in the end, they wound up with nothing.

Well, let's wait and see. Bush's legislation on assistance with prescription meds doesn't seem to have done diddly squat.

The US health insurance companies are practically omnipotent.

I can only imagine how much they are spending on lawyers to find every loophole in the new legislation.

My concerns would be:

* The poorest are covered for free (another dis-incentive to work)
* The working poor are forced to buy health insurance, removing that responsibility from the gov and decreasing their capacity to spend, let alone pay the bills

But yes, if the bill gets rid of things like pre-existing conditions, that'd be great.

And does it do anything to control the cost of prescription meds? I can't see big pharma letting that happen.

When you pass a bill but don't fund it, it's unlikely to have much of an effect.

The bill's imperfect, but it does a number of valuable things like opening 10,000 new Community Health Centers. Today, people without health insurance run to the emergency room, receive care that's extremely expensive to deliver, and then we pick up the tab. They'll be treated much more cost effectively at the CHCs. Huge savings to the taxpayer there.

It affects me personally. My 19 year old son will be able to stay on my insurance til he's 26, whether or not he's in school. And yes, no more pre-exisiting conditions.

Got my popcorn ready, these political discussions never end well. Looking forward to it!

SPK, gotta go with you on this one. Not even going near this one. Amazing how many try and rewrite the history books. Why bother to listen to the people, when the people are too dumb to speak in phrases more than three words strung together. Funny how we never discuss SPs or pussy on this board anymore. Wait, we do discuss pussies here, just not women......LOL

How are the losers insurance companies? Obama just increased their client base by making everyone purchase an insurance plan. The key loser here is the American taxpayer who will have to foot this monstrosity in the wake of double digit unemployment. The other loser is small and mid sized business who will find that the plans they provide their employees will increase in cost by minimum 10%.

Obama the liar and Communist

In the State of the Union Obama said that Jobs is his most important priority.

On Indionesian Television, the liar Obama said that Healthcare which the Rogue Congress just passed to make the US broke, was the most important priority.

His is a confirmed liar.

And this bill, I have news for you, is Uncostitutional. You cannot force someone living in a State in the United States to purchase health insurance under the threat of prison or fines. It is simply unconstitution under the Article I, Section 8, Clause 3 (Commerce Clause). Several states will sue the Federal government on behalf of their citizens. They have more than a compelling argument.

And for you that love him and live the US, your money will be as worthless as everyone elses, when all is said and done.

Obama will go down as the jackal that killed the goose that laid the golden egg.

And I have news for you Canadians. With a weak US, you will suffer also.

I can call Obama a Communist.

I still have Freedom of Speech, don't I?

I better go read the 2,700 pages and make sure.

Or maybe it is in the Admended bill?

Because of course it is much better to continue those of us who actually pay for the ridiculous cost of health care to continue to foot the bill for the indigent care.<insert sarcastic laughing smiley>
HELLO...we are paying for it now through increased costs, insurance premiums and reduced benefits.

And now that you got me started, lets talk about confirmed liars ... can you say WMD? If Obama is a confirmed liar, what does that make Bush and Cheney? <insert sarcastic laughing smiley>

A man makes statements about different priorities and that makes him a liar?!...How about having multiple priorities ... after all in the aftermath of 8 years of W there is so much to fix that the list is astounding! <insert sarcastic laughing smiley>

Another bowl of popcorn and another round of Sam Adams please!!!

I heard that the bill is some 2700 pages long! Canada's health care legislation was 15 pages!

Anyway, one issue:

If the poor can't afford health insurance, they'll receive a tax credit!

Yeah, a check in April will really help them at other times of the year when they can't afford it.

Even when they do get the check in April, I can't help but think they're going to blow it on lap dances. :D

That's what a lot of people who got Katrina checks did.

David Frum is a great mind. There's no arguing that. He's rarely wrong & one of the few former Bushies that i actually respect.

As for the insurance companies losing with this bill, i disagree. They'll now have over 40 million new clients. That's a lot of $$ for the insurance companies.

I also believe that the Republicans' negative attitude towards the bill has more to do with racism than common sense. A majority of the poor people the bill will help are black people. The white Republicans in the most part (who are against the bill) don't want to pay for poor black people's health care. If whites would comprise the majority of poor americans, it would be an entirely different story.

Just my opinion.

This bill makes us citizens responsible of their own health. In other words you either take care of it or there will be consequences, the bill tries to regulate the system. What's wrong with that? Americans do it all the time to other countries, just think of Irak...("get rid of your non-existent weapons or we will go in and bomb you"). When it comes to Americans regulating themselves it seems so unfair to the republican half.

And I have news for you Canadians. With a weak US, you will suffer also.
The economic system is changing, as an example our banks were not as affected as the American banks, thanks to regulations. There are other players in the world, china and India. I work for an engineering firm and you wouldn`t believe the fat contracts Chinese people sign. The US is losing its economical power, there are now other nations with equal influence.
