My source just told me that former habs coach Jean Perron was interviewed for one of the assistant coach jobs recently. With the likes of Alain Vigneault, Claude Julien & Kirk Muller being unavailable, the competition for the position(s) is fierce.

Also:

My Toronto source tells me that Zach Parise is planning a visit to Toronto within the next two weeks. Parise to the Leafs would make sense considering the team wouldn't have to give anything for his services, as compared to what they'd have to give in order to trade for Rick Nash.

Parise in a Leafs jersey  I had that dream and sadly, I woke up just as he was about to sign on the dotted line.

I really can't see Parise leaving Jersey. He is the face of the franchise. 90% he resigns there. Perron won't come any closer to an NHL bench than you will Doc.

MA, explain to me how the Devils can re-sign Parise. The team is bankrupt & is about to go to bankruptcy court, it already pays Ilya Kovalchuk a crazy amount of money, and during the regular season, the arena is empty. On top of this, half the team are free agents, including Brodeur. There's also the fact that Parise likely would have re-signed during the regular season if he had any intention of remaining in New Jersey. My guess is that he's heading to the west coast, possibly with the Sharks.

Its simple, if parise gets signed in NJ, then the team will go downhill fast because it will be Kovalchuk, Parise, Marty B and not much else because they wont be able to afford much talent beyond the top 3. Parise has said that getting along well with teammates and a new coach are very important for him if he chooses to go the free agent route and what better teammates could a guy have than Phil Kessel,Joffery Lupul, Tyler Bozak and another bunch of guys his age in the best hockey market in the world? And a pretty respectable coach as well. Ok, i just woke up again.... besides I'd rather have Jordan Staal between the "Thrill" and Lupul anyways.... awe heck if it's a dream then dream big! I'll take both Staal and Parise, and Luongo!

Vanessa Gold? Now your talking Doc!

Another reason which would compromise Parise staying with the Devils is the fact Lou Lamoriello might not be with the Devils next season. He and the team's owner, who stripped him of the team's presidency & appointed himself, do not speak to one another. According to insiders, Lamoriello has been miserable all year long & he might not hesitate to bolt the organization if the right offer came along.

Lamoriello is a brilliant GM & hockey man. He'd be an asset to any team that would hire him. I'd even go as far as saying that New Jersey never would have achieved the success it has over the years without Lou Lamoriello. No Lamoriello, no Stanley Cups.

More reasons why Lamoriello might bolt? The offseason will be hell for the Devils, with their imminent bankruptcy to be announced & the fact they need to re-sign a number of free agents with not much $$ to play with. They also have a number of key players that will be playing with only a year left to go on their current contract.

I just checked their pay scale & i'm somewhat astonished that Patrick Elias as a year left to go on a $5 million contract (cap hit $6 million). Patrick Elias?

My source just told me that Alex Kovalev wants to make a comeback with the habs. First Laracque wants to make a comeback, then it's Kovalev. Maybe he wants to end his career as a hab. Can Bergie & Mikie make it happen?

In other news, my source tells me that Marc Bergevin & Michel Therrien met today with former habs great (and former assistant coach) Yvan "The Roadrunner" Cournoyer. It is unknown at this time in which capacity Cournoyer would be used. Pro scouting maybe? Beer taster? Act as a stand-up comedian between periods when things look bleak? Who knows.....

NHL plans to take over NJ Devils

It's been long known that New Jersey Devils owner Jeff Vanderbeek is eager to sell a majority stake in the team to help pay overdue bills.

But if Vanderbeek fails to refinance the team's debt before an Aug. 14 deadline, NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman would be prepared to take control of the money-losing franchise, the New York Post is reporting.

A source close to the situation says the commissioner's office has lined up potential suitors in the event Vanderbeek cannot resolve his financial situation, the paper says.

Vanderbeek is said to be close to selling a majority stake to a mystery investor, which would allow him to keep control of the team, one source said.

But if a deal cannot be made, Vanderbeek could decide to put the Devils into bankruptcy and buy himself several months to arrange a restructuring plan.

But Bettman could take over the franchise before Aug. 14 so that he can allow another interested buyer time to look into the financial numbers and make an offer before the bankruptcy deadline, according to sources. The commissioner is expected to give Vanderbeek a few more weeks to complete a financial restructuring.

If new investors are brought in, they may not want to buy the team and leave Vanderbeek in charge, sources added.

Draft day preview: Could Yakupov slide to number 3?

by James Mirtle

He has been the consensus No. 1 choice for months, but in the hours leading up to Friday’s first round of the NHL draft, where Nail Yakupov is going to be taken is up in the air.

Some here in Pittsburgh believe all of the chatter is nonsense, and the Edmonton Oilers will in fact take him at No. 1.

Others believe the Oilers have their hearts set on adding a defenceman and that, in taking Ryan Murray at the top of the draft, Yakupov could fall as far as third or fourth in the draft. (Another option is they potentially trade down.)

Here’s a quick look through where the teams with top 10 picks stand in advance of Round 1, which gets going at 7 p.m.:

1. Edmonton Oilers - It’s down to two players, but GM Steve Tambellini isn’t tipping his hand who they’ll go with. It still sounds unlikely they trade down – the scuttlebutt is the asking price is too high – so expect them to go with either Yakupov or Murray. (If they do find a way to move down, Griffin Reinhart is a possibility.) I’d still put the odds at 60 to 70 per cent on Yakupov at this point, but many are convinced they’ll go with the blueliner.

2. Columbus Blue Jackets - The complicating factor for Columbus here is they aren’t crazy about taking Yakupov at No. 2. The late stage interviews they went through with him were apparently pretty tense, and after the failures of others like Nik Zherdev and Nikita Filatov, the Blue Jackets really don’t want another Russian with a high pick. If Edmonton takes Yakupov, however, expect Columbus to go with Murray. If Edmonton takes Murray, however, it’s believed Howson will either trade down or simply take Alex Galchenyuk at No. 2.

3. Montreal Canadiens - Depending on the scenario, that leaves the Canadiens with some interesting options. Obviously if Yakupov falls, he becomes an intriguing choice, but I’m hearing the Habs are also high on Galchenyuk, Filip Forsberg and Teuvo Teravainen (likely in that order).

4. New York Islanders - The Isles have been perhaps the hardest team to get a read on, as GM Garth Snow isn’t saying all that much. (He’s one of the few GMs I haven’t seen around town yet this week.) It’s believed they’d like a forward to play with John Tavares, so Forsberg seems like a fit if he falls that far. (Or Yakupov, obviously.) If Columbus trades down, however, all bets are off.

5. Toronto Maple Leafs - The Leafs appear resigned to staying at No. 5 given the asking prices to move up, but with Brian Burke, you never know. My sense is they’d like to get either Galchenyuk or Forsberg in this spot, but one of those two may not fall this far. If it comes to that, bet on them taking a defenceman despite their needs up front.

6. Anaheim Ducks - A year after trading away Jake Gardiner to the Leafs, the Ducks will now lose Justin Schultz to free agency, creating a hole for blueline prospects in the organization. The good news is there are a ton who could be available here. Morgan Rielly is one name that stands out, but they could also have their eye on Reinhart or Mathew Dumba as well.

7. Minnesota Wild - The Wild are another team that should wind up with a quality defenceman in this spot, although Mikhail Grigorenko is a real wild card in that no one knows how far he’ll fall. Consider Rielly, Reinhart, Dumba and Jacob Trouba as possibilities to add to their prospect pool.

8. Carolina Hurricanes - The Hurricanes were willing to move this pick in a deal for help up front, but that doesn’t appear to be materializing. GM Jim Rutherford has said for months his main goal is to get someone to play with Eric Staal, although don’t expect that to be his target in the draft. Expect them to take the best player available, which should be one of the solid defensive prospects that fall to eight. (They’ve interviewed all three of Rielly, Reinhart and Dumba recently.)

9. Winnipeg Jets - A forward makes sense for the Jets, although a lot depends on what happens above them with the first eight picks. If Grigorenko somehow drops this far, he could be a good fit. Radek Faksa, a big forward with a lot of character, is another option.

10. Tampa Bay Lightning - Steve Yzerman sounded Thursday like a man very comfortable with picking 10th and 19th in this draft so don’t expect much movement here. My sense is they’re looking to grab at least one of the highly touted defencemen here, with Sweden’s Hampus Lindholm a likely candidate.

The Philadelphia Flyers have sent back-up goaltender Sergei Bobrovski to Columbus for a 2nd-round pick & two 4th-round picks.

I think this is a great trade for Philly. Bobrovski wasn't happy playing second-fiddle to Bryzgalov, and Columbus overpaid for him. With that 2nd-round pick (#45 overrall), the Flyers could very likely draft one of the top 3 goalies in the draft. Malcom Subban likely will be gone by then, but there might be two top-notch goalies still up for grabs, one being a Russian & the other being from Finland.

In other news, Tim Thomas has agreed to remove his no-trade clause. My feeling is that this doesn't mean much other than to indicate that he won't play next season. He did it as a favor to the Bruins.

Strange move for the CBJ - expected them to go for a more experienced 'tender to mentor Mason instead of an unproven starter

Surprise, surprise.....the habs drafted a Russian-American! lol

Actually, that's a very good selection. I'm hoping Forsberg isn't picked by the Isles. If he is, i wouldn't be surprised if the Leafs trade down.

Congrats to Morgan Rielly: Your Newest Toronto Maple Leaf

Scouting report from various experts:

A gifted offensive defenseman that has the ability to generate offense in any situation. Shows the potential to be first pairing NHL defenseman and top end power play quarter back. He can create offensive opportunities with a excellent first pass and disrupt any manner of fore-check a team sends his way. His intelligence and skating ability will allow him to move the puck and rush the puck with equal efficiency. He will need time to develop his physical strength for his defensive game to handle NHL forwards. He will need an extra year of development at the junior or AHL level to make up for the lost time due to his knee injury. He did not miss a beat or any quickness or lateral movement after the knee injury. He seemed confident and did not hesitate to play his style upon his return. I consider him the purist offensive defenseman in the draft and should develop into a top pairing defenseman in the NHL.

“Dynamic. Explosive. Lots of offensive dimension,” he said. “We probably haven’t seen the best of him this year.”

Like fellow top prospect Alex Galchenyuk (profiled here), Rielly’s draft stock was sent into flux after he suffered a torn ACL. The injury happened in early November, 18 games into the Moose Jaw Warriors’ (Western Hockey League) regular season, and at first, he was only expected to miss a few weeks. On the first of December, however, he was having surgery to repair the torn knee ligament.

More than four months later and after being turned down in the first two rounds of the WHL playoffs, Rielly returned for the Eastern Conference Final. The Warriors were eliminated in five games by the eventual WHL champion Edmonton Oil Kings, and Rielly recorded three assists.

“He came back in the playoffs, and he was probably just starting to hit his stride when they were eliminated,” MacDonald said.

Some scouts believe that had it not been for his injury, Rielly would have been the top defensive selection on draft day. The same was surmised about Galchenyuk in regards to competing with Nail Yakupov for the top forward selection.

Despite the injury setback, Rielly didn’t see his draft stock falter too much. He was ranked fifth at the midterm by the NHL’s Central Scouting Service and remained at fifth in the group’s final evaluation.

Before being sidelined with the injury, Rielly was a point-per-game producer, recording 18 points (3g, 15a) in as many games. The 6-foot, 190-pound defenseman had 6 goals and 22 assists (28 points) in his first season with Moose Jaw.

Rielly projects to be a playmaking, power play quarterback in the NHL, as he possesses the necessary poise, patience and vision with the puck. He also has the right dosage of speed, agility, mobility and puckhandling skills that allow him to join an offensive attack and make end-to-end rushes. Scouts compare his style of play to that of Erik Karlsson, who was drafted 15th overall by the Ottawa Senators in 2008 and notched 78 points (19g, 59a) with the Sens in the 2011-12 season.

Jordan Staal traded to the Canes!!!

Jordan Staal traded to Carolina for the Canes' #1 pick, Brendan Sutter & Brian Dumoulin.

This is also Staal's wedding day!!!!!!!!

He's getting married tonight in Thunder Bay, and many of his Penguins teammates (or former) are in the city for his wedding.....must be a strange feeling, but Carolina was his destination of choice in order to play with his older brother Eric.

Schenn to Philly for JVR

http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=399090

Good trade for both teams as Schenn will help the flyers D especially if Pronger has lost a step, and Van Riemsdyk addresses a positional need as a big top 6 forward for the Leafs. Both young both highly talented, a good trade is one that appears to work for both teams and this is clearly just that. Sad to see you go Luke, and welcome to Toronto JVR!

Loving JVR already!

"To go to a place like Toronto is unbelievably exciting for me," van Riemsdyk said on a conference call. "Just the tradition they have there, the city, the fans it's all unbelievable and growing up a big-time Yankees fans, a good analogy for me is that it's like playing for the New York Yankees of the NHL."
